New to Pilates? Start here!

Maybe you've been thinking of trying pilates for some time — then you've come to the right studio! Our instructors have been practicing pilates for many years and have a lot of experience and knowledge to share. We offer two ways to get you started.

  1. Want to begin with a more "hands on" approach? Give us a call at 916-774-9642 to schedule an Initial Assessment with one of our studio owners to cover the basics and evaluate the best plan of action. The Initial Assessment is 55 minutes with introduction to the Reformer, Cadillac and/or Chair. 
     
  2. Or you may drop in to one of our pilates mat classes. No reservations or experience is needed. All of our instructors are experienced pilates instructors and teach multi-level mat classes. See our schedule for dates and times that classes are offered.

Will I be able to
do Pilates if I have a bad back?

Although you should always consult your physician before starting any fitness routine, a pilates workout is gentle and controlled with no sudden jarring actions. It is therefore more important that you work with a qualified instructor to ensure that you are doing the movements correctly. An experienced instructor will be able to modify the exercises to accommodate your limitations, continually challenge you within your range and monitor your improvements. If you commit yourself to a consistent workout schedule you will certainly feel results.


Is pilates similar
to yoga?

In some respects pilates is like yoga. Both are considered mind-body type methods of movement; both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage the mind-body connection. The difference is that while yoga requires moving from one static posture to the next, pilates flows through a series of movements that are more dynamic, systematic and anatomically-based incorporating resistance equipment (reformer).


What is the best thing to wear to class?

Comfortable exercise clothes that let you have full range of motion is fine. We prefer the clothes not be too baggy or loose. Those types of clothes tend to be too revealing and because an instructor must be able to see your alignment and muscle use. We typically wear nothing on our feet, but there are yoga socks that have grip on the bottom that are o.k. to use.


What is a Reformer Class?

Assistance with resistance. The Reformer provides finely tuned exercise resistance that allows one to work very precisely to develop good alignment, core strength and flexibility. The springs provide resistance from the machine. The rest of the resistance is provided by your own body weight. The springs hook on the spring bar, and different springs can be unhooked to increase or decrease the resistance. Reformer is a great compliment to pilates mat and vice versa.


How do I sign up for a Reformer Class?

Contact our studio at 916-774-9642 to speak with one of our instructors. They will determine your skill level and put you in a class that best meets your fitness and skill level.


Do I need to bring a mat to the studio classes – pilates or yoga?

Yes, please bring a mat with you to class. If you do not have one or forgot your mat, we have mats for purchase. If you are in need of a block or strap, we have plenty for you to borrow.


Are all classes drop-in or do you need a reservation?

Our pilates mat and yoga studio classes are all on a drop-in basis and most are multi-level. Consult the schedule for studio class times and class descriptions. If you would like to attend a reformer class or private session, these are on a reservation only basis. Contact the studio for more information. If you would like to attend one of our workshops, these are also on a reservation basis to ensure a small class size to give you the most attention.
